Price Says: ‘Read the Bill!’
Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement after signing the Responsible Healthcare Reform Pledge. By doing so, Price has vowed not to vote in favor of any health care reform legislation that he has not read and that has not been available online for at least 72 hours. The text of the pledge and a list of its signers can be found here.
“Some in Congress apparently believe they don’t need to understand the legislation on which they vote,” said Congressman Price. “That attitude is completely irresponsible, especially on an issue as important as health care reform. Health care concerns every single American – young or old; rich or poor; Republican, Democrat, or Independent – and they should all have the time to read and understand it before Congress votes on it.
“Taking the proper time is only an obstacle to those who wish to discretely slip unsavory or irresponsible provisions into law. Anyone who is truly interested in responsible and successful governance should see transparency and thoughtful deliberation as a benefit, rather than a hindrance. I call on every Member of Congress to sign this pledge ensuring that the American people are confident they know what they are getting with health care reform.”
